How it works: The Federal Child Support Tables (Guidelines s.3, Schedule I) set a monthly amount based on the paying parent's province or territory of residence, their annual income, and the number of children. Each table is built from $1,000 income bands with a basic amount plus a percentage applied to the income above that band's floor -- the same method used here. Above $150,000, Guidelines s.4 applies and a court has discretion over the amount on the excess. This is the base table amount only -- it does not include add-ons for section 7 special or extraordinary expenses (childcare, medical, extracurricular, post-secondary), shared-custody adjustments, or undue-hardship claims.

Frequently asked questions

How much is child support for 1 child in Northwest Territories?

Under the Federal Child Support Tables effective October 1, 2025, a paying parent in Northwest Territories earning $70,000 a year owes $654/month for 1 child. The amount below $16,000 of income is $0 -- that is the table's income floor for Northwest Territories.

How is the Northwest Territories child support table calculated?

The table is built from $1,000 income bands. Support = the band's basic amount + (the band's percentage x the portion of income above the band's floor). Northwest Territories has its own table because the federal formula factors in provincial income tax rates -- the same income produces a different amount in a different province.

Does Northwest Territories use the federal table, or its own?

Northwest Territories has adopted the Federal Child Support Tables directly into its own provincial child support legislation, so the same dollar amounts apply under either the federal Divorce Act or provincial family law.

What if income is over $150,000 in Northwest Territories?

Guidelines section 4 applies. By default, the Northwest Territories table amount at $150,000 is extended using the province's own percentage on the income above $150,000 (shown in the calculator above). A court can order a different amount for the excess instead, based on the children's needs and each parent's means.
