TFSA contribution limits by year (2009-2026)

The TFSA dollar limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500 each year. Cumulative room assumes you were a Canadian resident aged 18+ starting in 2009, with no contributions or withdrawals.

How TFSA room works

Carry-forward: unused room never expires. If you haven't contributed the maximum in a prior year, the difference adds to your available room indefinitely.

Withdrawals re-add room the FOLLOWING January 1 — not the same year. Withdraw $5,000 in 2026 and that $5,000 becomes new room on January 1, 2027, on top of the 2027 annual limit. Re-contributing the same year you withdrew, with no other room available, triggers an over-contribution.

Over-contribution penalty: the CRA charges 1% per month on the highest excess amount for each month you're over your limit, until it's withdrawn or new room opens up. Use the TFSA over-contribution penalty calculator to estimate the cost.

How to check your TFSA room

The most reliable option is CRA My Account → Savings and pension plans → View TFSA details → Contribution room. You can also file Form RC343 (TFSA Contribution Room Worksheet) using your own records.

Watch the lag: CRA only updates your TFSA information once a year, each spring, using the PRIOR year's transactions as reported by your financial institution — 2025 contributions and withdrawals are processed by April 2026. If you contribute again before your CRA account catches up, cross-check against your own statements first, or you risk an accidental over-contribution.

What about the 2027 limit?

The CRA and Department of Finance typically confirm next year's TFSA dollar limit in November. The 2027 figure is not official yet — see our 2027 TFSA limit projection for how the indexation math works and what would need to happen for it to rise.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TFSA contribution limit for 2026?

The 2026 TFSA dollar limit is $7,000, unchanged from 2025. It is added to every eligible Canadian's contribution room on January 1, 2026, regardless of income.

What is my total TFSA contribution room since 2009?

If you were a Canadian resident and at least 18 years old for every year from 2009 through 2026 and have never contributed or withdrawn, your cumulative room is $109,000. Younger Canadians only accumulate room starting the year they turn 18.

When do TFSA withdrawals add back to my room?

Withdrawals are added back as new contribution room on January 1 of the year AFTER you withdraw — not immediately. A 2026 withdrawal does not restore room until January 1, 2027.

What happens if I over-contribute to my TFSA?

The CRA charges a 1%-per-month penalty tax on the highest excess amount in each month you are over your room, until you withdraw the excess or new room opens on January 1. Use the TFSA over-contribution penalty calculator to estimate the cost before it compounds.

How do I check my actual TFSA contribution room?

Sign in to CRA My Account and use the contribution-room calculator, or use Form RC343. Note the CRA figure lags: it updates once a year each spring with the PRIOR year's transactions reported by your financial institution, so recent-year contributions and withdrawals may not show yet — always cross-check against your own records.
