How room works: Each January 1st, your TFSA room increases by (a) the annual contribution limit and (b) any amount you withdrew in the previous year. Unused room carries forward indefinitely. Over-contributions are taxed 1% per month on the excess until withdrawn. This calculator estimates based on the inputs you provide — the CRA's My Account is the authoritative source for your personal room.

Over-contribution rules

Penalty: 1% per month on the highest excess amount in the month. Charged until the excess is withdrawn or absorbed by new room on January 1.

Common mistake: re-contributing a withdrawal in the same calendar year. The withdrawal doesn't add back to room until the NEXT January 1 — if you have no other room, re-contributing triggers an over-contribution penalty immediately.

Reporting: Form RC243 (TFSA Return) is due June 30 of the following year. Interest and late-filing penalties apply if not filed.

Non-residents: Contributing while a non-resident of Canada adds an additional 1%/month penalty until the contribution is withdrawn or you become a resident again.
