FHSA Contribution Limit 2027
The 2027 FHSA annual participation room is $8,000, with a $40,000 lifetime limit — unchanged from 2026 and every year since the program started in 2023. Because these figures aren't indexed to inflation, we don't have to wait for an official announcement the way we do for the TFSA or RRSP.

Why we can confirm 2027 today
The TFSA dollar limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500 each year — its 2027 figure isn't confirmed until CRA/Finance Canada announce it, typically each November. The confirmed 2026 TFSA limit is $7,000; the RRSP dollar limit for 2026 is $33,810, rising with average wage growth. Neither site has a 2027 figure yet.
The FHSA doesn't have that problem. Its $8,000 annual and $40,000 lifetime limits are flat dollar amounts written directly into the Income Tax Act when the program launched in 2023. No CRA page describes an indexation mechanism for them, so absent a specific legislative change, they hold — which is why this page states the 2027 figures as confirmed rather than projected.
| Account | 2027 limit | Status |
|---|---|---|
| FHSA | $8,000/yr ($40,000 lifetime) | Confirmed — fixed by statute |
| TFSA | Not yet announced ($7,000 in 2026) | Expected ~November 2026 |
| RRSP | Not yet announced ($33,810 in 2026) | Published in CRA's year-end release |
See TFSA contribution limit 2027 (projected) for how the TFSA's indexation math works, and RRSP limit 2026 for the latest confirmed RRSP figure.
Carryforward: how unused room rolls forward into 2027
Unused FHSA room carries forward up to a maximum of $8,000 — it does not stack indefinitely the way TFSA room does. If you opened an FHSA in 2026 and didn't use all your room, the unused portion (capped at $8,000) rolls into 2027 on top of the $8,000 2027 base.
Worked example: contribute nothing in 2026 after opening your first FHSA that year, and your 2027 room becomes $16,000 — $8,000 base plus the full $8,000 carryforward. You're still bounded by the $40,000 lifetime limit across every year you hold the account.
Over-contribution penalty
Contribute or transfer more than your available FHSA room and the CRA charges a tax of 1% per month on the highest excess amount in each month you're over, until it's eliminated. You must file Form RC728 and Schedule A to report and pay it. Use the FHSA over-contribution penalty calculator to estimate the cost.
Meanwhile: how long your FHSA stays open
Your maximum participation period ends December 31 of the year the earliest of these happens: the 15th anniversary of opening your first FHSA, you turn 71, or the year following your first qualifying withdrawal. See the 2026 FHSA contribution limit page for the full breakdown and sources.
Frequently asked questions
What is the FHSA contribution limit for 2027?
The 2027 FHSA annual participation room is $8,000, and the lifetime limit is $40,000 — the same as every year since the program launched in 2023. Unlike a year-ahead TFSA or RRSP figure, this doesn't need to wait for a CRA or Finance Canada announcement: the FHSA limits are fixed dollar amounts in the Income Tax Act, not indexed to inflation.
Will the FHSA limit ever increase above $8,000?
Only if Parliament amends the Income Tax Act. There is no built-in indexation formula for the FHSA's $8,000 annual and $40,000 lifetime limits the way there is for the TFSA (indexed, rounded to the nearest $500) or the RRSP (tied to average wage growth). Any change would be a specific legislative decision, typically announced in a federal budget, not an automatic annual adjustment.
Does FHSA contribution room carry forward into 2027?
Yes. Unused room carries forward up to a maximum of $8,000. If you had unused room at the end of 2026, your 2027 total room is the $8,000 2027 base plus up to $8,000 carried forward — as much as $16,000 available to contribute or transfer in 2027 alone.
What happens if I over-contribute to my FHSA?
The CRA charges a tax of 1% per month on the highest excess FHSA amount in each month you exceed your participation room, until the excess is eliminated by new room opening on January 1 or by a designated withdrawal or transfer. Use the FHSA over-contribution penalty calculator to estimate the cost.
