Institution number, transit number and routing number
A branch routing number has two parts: the five-digit branch (transit) number and the institution's three-digit number.
Payments Canada lists each branch twice. For one Amex Bank of Canada branch the electronic routing number is
030300012, which is a leading 0, the institution number
303 and the transit number 00012. The paper (MICR) number puts them the other way round with a
hyphen: 00012-303. This page lists institutions only; for a branch's own
transit number use the
Payments Canada branch directory
or check your cheques and online banking.

Trust companies and other deposit-taking institutions
Trust companies and other deposit-taking institutions: institution numbers
What is the institution number for RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank and CIBC?
Royal Bank of Canada is 003, The Toronto-Dominion Bank is 004, Bank of Montreal is 001, The Bank of Nova Scotia is 002 and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce is 010, as listed by Payments Canada.
What is an institution number versus a transit number?
The institution number is a three-digit code for the bank or other deposit-taking institution; it is the same for every branch. The transit number is the five-digit number of the individual branch. In Payments Canada's directory a branch has an electronic routing number (030300012 for one Amex Bank of Canada branch: a leading 0, the institution number 303, then the transit number 00012) and a paper number written transit-institution (00012-303).
What is the institution number for Desjardins?
Fédération des caisses Desjardins du Québec is listed under 815. Payments Canada also lists other caisse populaire federations and central credit unions under their own numbers; see the credit unions table on this page.
Where do I find my branch transit number?
This page lists institutions, not branches. Your branch transit number is on your cheques and direct deposit form and in your online banking. Payments Canada also publishes a branch directory with every branch routing number.
How current is this list?
The numbers come from the Payments Canada financial institutions branch directory lists dated 2026-10-16. Payments Canada updates the directory weekly; an institution number changes only when an institution is added, merged or leaves the system.
